The word &”;South Guangdong&”; now refers to Guangdong Province. It is a popular usage of Guangdong as a abbreviation. History also includes some areas outside Guangdong. The word &”;Nanyue&”; was first found in the historical records of Qin and Han Dynasti《史记》 was called Nanyue in the middle of China, whil《汉书》 called Nanyue in China. In ancient literature, &”;Yue&”; and &”;Yue&”; were interchangeable. Guangdong, in its original meaning, refers to Baiyue in South China. After Sui and Tang Dynasties, the meaning of the word &”;Guangdong&”; narrowed, referring to Lingnan area, or &”;Southern Guangdong&”;. The word &”;Guangdong&”; in &”;Cantonese&”; means this. &”;Cantonese&”; refers to the ethnic groups whose mother tongue is Cantonese in Lingnan area. Until modern times, Guangdong and Guangxi were still called &”;Guangdong&”;. Later, the word &”;Guangdong&”; was defined as the abbreviation of Guangdong Province. Other areas are no longer called Guangdong.
