Why do flowers smell sweet? The fragrance of flowers comes from petals. This is because petals contain oil cells, from which fragrant oil with fragrance can be secreted. With the moisture, the aromatic oil volatilizes into the air, so the thick aroma floats around in the air. When the weather is clear, the sun is shining and the temperature rises, the aromatic oil in the petals volatilizes faster and floats farther, so the fragrance is more intense. Although there are no oil cells in their petals, they also smell fragrant. Their cells contain a substance called glycoplast, which has no fragrance, but it can also emit a fragrant smell when it is decomposed by enzymes. Different flowers have different abilities to secrete aromatic oil and decompose glycoconjugates, which is why some flowers are strong and some are light. Generally speaking, the fragrance of white flowers and light yellow flowers is the strongest, followed by purple flowers, yellow flowers and light blue flowers. But there are exceptions, for example, white peony is not as fragrant as purple rose, because the shade of flower fragrance is related to the variety of flowers. Are all the flowers fragrant? Not all flowers are full of fragrance. This is because some flowers rely on fragrance to attract insects to spread pollen. However, some flowers attract insects by their bright colors, and others by their sweet nectar. Like the flower of a willow, it is small and not fragrant, but it has sweet nectar. There are also some plants that rely on the wind to spread pollen. These plants have neither flowers nor colors and nectar, such as the flowers of corn.
