It has been argued for many years that Guangzhou and Foshan may merge in the future, but this possibility is very small, much less than the probability that Shenzhen can be upgraded to a municipality directly under the central government. Although scholars have been discussing this for many years, they have little support. If we merge in order to surpass Beijing and Shanghai in GDP, this will not make much sense. The status and influence of a city in the world has never been determined solely by GDP. Can Shenzhen easily replace its international status if its GDP exceeds it? With the merger of Guangzhou and Buddhism, the market will of the two places is even less strong. The citizens of Guangzhou are not psychologically prepared to embrace and accept Foshan&;s friends, and Foshan&;s citizens are also carefree in their lives. Foshan&;s friends&; happiness index ranks among the top in the country, and they have no strong intention to merge with Foshan. Therefore, it is unlikely that Guangzhou and Foshan will merge. The two places should fully tap their cultural characteristics, enhance their comprehensive competitiveness, and it is ideal to build Guangzhou and Foshan into two Lingnan pearls.
