South China University of Technology, formerly known as South China Institute of Technology, was founded by the Ministry of Education. It can be traced back to the first Class A industrial school in Guangdong Province established in 1918. It was formally established in 1952 during the adjustment period of colleges and universities in China. It was based on the engineering departments and majors of Institute of Technology of Sun Yat-sen University, Institute of Technology of South China United University, Institute of Technology of Lingnan University, and Guangdong Polytechnic College, and was transferred to Hunan University, Wuchang Zhonghua University, Wuhan Jiaotong University, Nanchang University, Guangxi University and other five institutions. It is one of the four new engineering colleges. In 1960, it became a national key university. In 1988, it was renamed South China University of Technology.
