Guangzhou has jurisdiction over ten districts and two county-level cities, with a total area of 7,434.4 square kilometers and a total registered population of 7,251,900. In April 2005, the State Council approved the revocation of Dongshan District and the merger of its area into Yuexiu District; Fangcun District was abolished, its area was merged into Liwan District, and Nansha District and Luogang District were newly established.
