Figs have flowers. Ficus carica trees have been widely planted in Weihai for a long time, especially in front of rural households and small vegetable gardens, and in the green belts of urban communities. Although Weihai is rich in figs, few people know and have seen figs bloom. There are five fruitless trees in my yard, and I have never seen what this flower looks like. Ficus carica belongs to Ficus of Moraceae, which mainly grows in some tropical and temperate places and belongs to subtropical deciduous small trees. The name fig will make many people think that it is a plant that can bear fruit without flowering, but it is not. We carefully observe that when a small fig just grows in its axil, we can see a small scar on its top when we pick one. When we look closely at a small hole, we can cut it in half with a knife, and we can see that there are many small flowers in it, and there are two kinds of flowers, that is, flowers with different sexes. These flowers bloom in a total receptacle, and they pollinate each other. So it doesn&;t bear fruit without flowering, but a cryptocephalus. In fact, the fig we usually eat is not its real fruit, but a meat ball formed by the expansion of the receptacle. The so-called fig is actually a compound fruit formed by the development of the huge receptacle and stamen. When you open the fig, you will see that there are filaments and many small seeds in it. The filaments are the stamens, and the stalks are the seeds that are pollinated. The flower of fig has only small stamens and no petals. The big receptacle wraps those small stamens, and only a little pink stamens can be seen at the top, while the female stamens grow along the four walls of the receptacle. Well, now you, like me, suddenly realize that figs are not worthy of the name!
